Manik Chandra Barooah Memorial Debating Competition
Manik Chandra Barooah,
a legendary figure and statesman was an institution
by himself. It was the result of the untiring efforts
of this great man that Cotton College came into
being in 1901. It was he who convinced the then
British rulers and authorities of the need of facilities
for higher education in the Brahmaputra valley.
As a token of respect and gratefulness to Manik
Chandra Barooah, Cotton College Union Society (CCUS)
has been organizing the Manik Chandra Barooah (MCB)
Memorial Debating Competition since 1979. The 1st
MCB Memorial Debating Competition was held in 1979
as a state level competition. Over the years, the
competition has grown manifold and been organized
as a national level competition since the 1990s.
Many eminent personalities and Parliamentarians
like Dinesh Goswami, Arun Shourie, Mani Sankar Aiyar,
Purna A. Sangma, Maneka Gandhi, L.N. Mishra, Sitaram
Yechury and many others have graced the competition
as the Speakers at different points of time. Every
year, the MCB Debating Competition is held in the
2nd week of September. This competition has been
providing a platform for discussion on current affairs
and problems facing the society, emerging as a keen
forum for social and intellectual consciousness
of the state.
